What on earth is social media?
Yes we’re all talking about social media but what on earth is it? What are the benefits & is it for me.

How the heck does it all work?

Russell talks about how social media works and how it relates to what you already do in marketing.

Rugby World Cup 2011 Official list of “you can’t use these words”

Is your business playing by the Rugby World Cup rules for marketing? Or are you going for a creative slogan like “The Big Footy Mug 2012 -1″

There have been some pretty stringent laws passed in light of the Rugby World Cup about to kick off on the 9th September and I was asked today what exactly am I allowed or not allowed to say to promote my business to these international visitors?

So I did a bit of digging around and found the following website MEMA Legislation which looks about as gorgeous as the legislation itself. (But then I’m not a legal beagle just a graphics junkie, after all I worked for approx 5 hours to make a paper based todo list template look nice enough for me to use)

So here is a bit of an interpretation (and no do not take my No.8 wire approach as a verbatim interpretation of the law, it’ll just get you in trouble and probably me too).

Flash Haka Sylvia Park – Flash mobs go tribal and local in Aotearoa

This guy was lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time. He was on his way home when something odd was happening. What appeared to be the start of a fight was actually the start of a Flash Mob – like Haka at Sylvia Park in Auckland.

What’s in a word – Why are keywords for websites are so important?

Keywords for websites

A friend asked me over the weekend why I get so passionate about keywords, why are keywords for websites are so important? I had to think for a moment because to me keywords are such an integral part of the overall marketing strategies that I had to both phrase it right and keep it concise. ”In essence” I said, “keywords are the key indicators which represent where you customers are”

New Zealand WHAKA YEAH! – Watch the video, get the T-Shirt

whakayeah

From a real funny video posted on my Facebook wall to a full ecommerce website I uncovered a great little campaign today.

A local Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/NewZealandWHAKAYEAH created a youtube video to support the All Blacks on their World Cup Campaign (actually according to their “Religious Views” they support the All Blacks in whatever cup)

Are you prepared for possible Social Media Fallout?

Are people tweeting about your business?

My assistant approached me today with a response from a company who I had asked her to contact to cancel a service. Earlier in the day she had phoned this company and informed them that we no longer had a need for the service that they provided and could they please come an collect their gear. She received a reply telling her that the company would charge us a $50 cancellation fee and 5months contract break fee.

Social Media Marketing, Language & Demographics and setting the standards for your brand’s social media presence

Coke targeting the right audience

Whether marketing online or offline we know that understanding the demographics and sample persona’s of our target markets aids greatly in the improved effectiveness of getting the message to the right people. For example a sports shop might have several demographic profiles separating male and female audiences as well as age groups and lifestyles and interests resulting in some pretty specific groupings around who they should target what message to. Take Coca Cola for example, so much of their targeted marketing is pretty obvious in so far as who they believe their audience is and I think we could all agree that they’ve probably got it bang on.

When it comes to online and the ability to have your brand and subsequent marketing messages reach so many people so quickly it can prove to be very powerful if you get it right. Conversely if you screw it up the damage to your brand can be difficult to remedy if that damage creates its own viral campaign of anti brand. There are many components of getting your online marketing message right and hitting the right audience and it is sometimes a delicate balance of using the right language and picking the right market.

rugbyworldcup

So I know that the All Blacks venturing into the world cup doesn’t really much to do with my marketing blog but I simply couldn’t resist sharing this short video created by Glove39. 1100 photos taken over 2 weeks resulted in a brilliant 1 minute Rugby World Cup video.

What have you seen about the Rugby World Cup 2011 online that’s worth a mention?

Introducing new and improved sitelinks on Google

New Look Site links in Google search

Last week Google launched an update to sitelinks to improve the organization and quality of our search results. Sitelinks are the two columns of links that appear under some search results and ads that help users easily navigate deeper into the site. Sitelinks haven’t changed fundamentally: they’re still generated and ranked algorithmically based on the link structure of your site, and they’ll only appear if useful for a particular query.
